‘Preston’ Dents.

Under construction:

d. William Dent, was born 1792 in Lancaster, the 4th son of the previously mentioned Myles Dent and Rachel Waters. He was baptised 16th September at St Mary’s Church (The Priory), Lancaster. He married Mary Dwyer on the 23rd September 1811 at Lancaster.

By the time of the 1841 census, William and Mary were living in Church Street, Preston, with William’s occupation listed as a ‘Stay Maker’. In 1851 they were living at 45 Lune Street, Preston, and by 1861 had moved to 13 Stanley Place, Preston. William died in 1863 in Ashton on Ribble.

Their family had grown, as follows, with their first, another

…..(A) William Dent, born in June 1812 in Lancaster, prior to the move to Preston. In 1835 at St John’s Church, Preston, he married Mary Ann BARTON. Mary was born in 1815 in Walton le Dale, daughter of Sarah Barton. By 1841, William and Mary Ann were living in Everton Gardens, Preston, (site of the present day bus terminus.) with William’s occupation given, like his father, as ‘Stay Maker’. (Think corsets!)

Shortly after that, William had taken on the licence of the New Bridge Inn on the banks of the River Ribble, later known as the Bowling Green Inn. William held the licence for several years and appears to have been a very popular ‘mine host’, later branching out into horticulture, holding flower shows, some grown from his own garden alongside the Inn. William died in 1853, upon which Mary Ann continued with the Inn until about 1860. She lived on with her son Miles (below) until her death in 1888 in Preston.

William and Mary Ann had children:-

(i) Mary Waters Dent, born 1835 in Preston.

It is unclear if he took Catherine with him. By 1859 he is living in Mandurang, near Bendigo in Victoria, possibly following the gold rush to the area. Also about this time Henry also appears to have married a Maria Smith. About 1862, Henry moved on to Otago in New Zealand, and in 1885 was living in Dunstan, Otago, New Zealand, before returning to England. On a further voyage south back towards New Zealand, it is believed Henry committed suicide, and was buried at sea on 24 June 1885.
